Well, let’s look at the human body. A person is more than just the cells in their body. That is why we can transplant organs in people. Transplanting a kidney from another person does not give you any of their personality. If they were a poet, receiving the kidney does not make you more poetic. Also, if the poet loses a leg in a horrible accident, they don’t become less poetic. These are just pieces parts that make up our body. Some might say that your brain is what gives you a unique personality. If that were so, then why do scientist, who study artificial intelligence, struggle with creating uniqueness. The same computer hardware, given the same programming, always results in the same outcome. Whereas, twins raised together, sharing the same experiences, can turn out to be vastly different. There must be something more. Christians call this entity that makes you unique, a soul. The Hebrew word is ruach, which literally means “the breath of life”. You are literally breathed into existence.
Ok, now for a little more science. Science has several laws that can be proven to be true. Like the law of gravity. I would like to discuss the Law of Conservation of Mass. This law states that matter cannot be created or destroyed. So, if you start a fire inside of a sealed chamber, the wood in the fire might look like it is being destroyed. But it is actually just changing state through a thermal reaction. If you measure all of the molecules in the chamber before and after the fire, the mass would be exactly the same. Nothing is destroyed.
So, after I die, the energy, that we call a soul, doesn’t cease to exist. It continues on. As Christians, we believe that once our soul leaves our body we continue on with God. To be absent of the body is to be with the Lord. We are not equal to God. We are still his children, we’ve just been transfigured. God offers this option to everyone. You could be with him after your body has stopped working. It costs you nothing. It’s just a choice.
